Job Description

OVERVIEW:

The Supervising Nurse is responsible for the day to day supervision of the program's nursing and milieu staff regarding all medical procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIESINCLUDE (BUT NOT LIMITED TO):

  • Oversee all aspects of the medical/nursing department(s) in the program.

  • Implement and integrate medical protocols into the management of client medical diagnoses.

  • When applicable, supervise other nursing staff in the execution of the medical protocols.

  • Administer medication to clients within scope of practice.

  • May act as medical representative at mental health team meetings.

  • Responsible for addressing the medical component of government and JCAHO audits.

  • Participate in client education programs on relevant health related issues.

  • Assist in pharmacy reviews and medication security procedures.

  • Ensure that hospitalized clients receive timely and appropriate care.

  • Work closely as a liaison with program physicians and psychiatrists.

  • May assist with the management of the triplicate prescription system for all agency physicians and psychiatrists.

  • Coordinate with school nurses, nursing care and medical requirements for all residential clients who attend outside educational facilities.

  • May coordinate, prepare and distribute all routine administrative medical reports, as required by any licensing and/or regulatory bodies.

  • May be asked to carry a beeper and be on call for the program.

  • Other duties as assigned

Job Requirements


  • Minimum education level of a BSN or RN. 
  • Position may require specialized expertise in the area of mental health, developmental disorders, crisis intervention, AIDS or infectious disease or other areas as deemed appropriate for the program’s needs. 
  • Should be familiar with standard reporting requirements as dictated by those to whom the division is accountable.
