Job Description

Program Overview: Tanya Towers Apartment Treatment Program is located in Manhattan.  The program provides Deaf and Deaf/Blind adults with a wide-range of psychiatric diagnoses and intensive supportive services in a “Deaf friendly” residential setting.  All 50 apartments are located in buildings that have state-of-the art accommodations for people with disabilities, and are specially designed to maintain or improve the ability of Deaf and Deaf/Blind residents to live independently.


To facilitate communication between the hearing and hearing-impaired within the program, agency and the community.  To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions unless this causes undue hardship to the Agency.

Essential Functions:

  • Interpret sign to voice and voice to sign during staff meetings, group activities, community meetings, special program events-holiday celebrations, case conferences, telephone calls, staff supervision, community events, training sessions, client socialization, and staff/client interactions.

  • Escort and interpret client on field trips and outside appointments

  • Participate in in-service training for members of multi-disciplinary team on language issues.

  • Participate in staff meetings related to client and program issues.

  • Supervision of clients during program activities, and meal times.

  • May be assigned other tasks and duties reasonably related to their job responsibilities


Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree or High School Diploma/GED plus 4-year experience as a professional interpreter.
Skills and/or Experience Required:
  • Fluency in American Sign Language.
  • 1-year experience as Sign Language Interpreter in a related field preferred.
  • New York State Certification as a Sign Language Interpreter or equivalent preferred.
  • 1-year experience in a mental health setting preferred.
  • Proficient in Sign to Voice and Voice to Sign Interpreting.
Communication Skills:
  • Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints, including those of a sensitive and confidential nature, from any of the following, if applicable, under a variety of circumstances, including adversarial situations: clients, consumers, managers, employees, regulatory agencies, arbitrators, union representatives, vendors, or applicants.
  • Ability to effectively present information to clients, top management and staff in sign language.
  • Conducts self in a professional manner in all interactions with clients, as well as collateral contacts.
Mathematical Skills:
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical skills such as addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.
Reasoning Skills:
  • Ability to work within general guidelines and minimal supervision.
  • Ability to recognize the need for confidentiality of information and to maintain such confidences.
Physical Demands:
  • Regularly required to speak clearly and hear the spoken word well.
  • Occasionally required to travel to sites in and outside the company using customary modes of public or private transportation.
  • Regularly required to move fingers, wrist, arms, and legs and feet in a repetitive manner as necessary to sign effectively.
Work Environment:
  • Noise level is consistent with levels usually present in an office, educational, rehabilitation, industrial, workshop or health related environment.
  • Hazards present are consistent with those common to an office, educational, rehabilitation, industrial, workshop or health related environment.
