Job Description

OVERVIEW: The Recreation Team Leader is responsible for the overall functioning of recreational services. This includes formulating appropriate policies and procedures to insure the recreation services are meeting the prescribed standards for the Jewish Board and the needs of the youth at Kaplan House.

RESPONSIBILITES include but are not limited to:

  • Providing and coordinating a variety of activities both at Kaplan House, and in the community.
  • Assess and developing with residents if needed recreational activity of personal interest.
  • Formulating an individual recreational treatment plan for each resident, including goals and tasks.
  • Completing an initial recreational assessment and completed recreational summary.
  • Documenting progress notes in Connections on each resident.
  • Creating a monthly recreational calendar by assessing the interest of all residents.
  • Providing the recreational services within an allocated budget for the recreation program.
  • Purchasing all supplies and equipment; accounting for all expenses required to provide appropriate recreation programming.
  • Planning for special events and holidays to incorporate ethnic and cultural needs.
  • Assessing the need for specialized groups and hiring Independent Contractors  to work in the house  with residents (e.g. Yoga Instructors, Art  Therapist, etc.).
  • Maintaining an inventory of all supplies and equipment in the recreation program.
  • Seeking out and maintaining contact with relevant community agencies that offer recreational programming.
  • Coordinating and overseeing all volunteers and their activities at Kaplan House.
  • Working closely with the agency’s Volunteer Department in the recruitment of volunteers for Kaplan House.
  • Working in a team with administrative or other professional personnel such as those engaged in medicine, social work, nursing, psychology and therapy, to ensure that recreational is well balanced, coordinated and integrated with special services.
  • Attending all treatment team meetings.
  • Work with milieu staff that they are prepared to engage the residents in recreational activities.
  • Serve as a backup for  coverage  on the unit for the AM  and PM  Team  Leaders.
  • Coordinate   and oversee all  independent  living skills for the clients.
  • Work in collaboration with the Assistant  Director  and  for disciplinary actions for  staff. Meet  regularly with the clinical and other.
  • Meet regularly with clinical and nursing  staff, advising  them of any change in client’s behavior  or specific needs  that the client may  be exhibiting.  
  • Provide direct milieu care  on as needed basis.


Job Requirements

Masters or BA  preferred in recreation or physical education or related discipline.1-2 years of experience or working with older adolescents  preferably in a residential setting. Some knowledge and practice of working with youth in trauma informed care.  Supervisory experience is preferred.
