Job Description

OVERVIEW: The Parent Advocate will be available to parents of new admissions for an orientation to the program.  The orientation will be from the perspective of the parent to include an overview of the program. This overview may include milieu treatment structure, treatment modalities, expectations of the family in treatment, and discharge planning. 

RESPONSIBILITIES include but not limited to:

  1. Attend quarterly Parent Advisory Council meetings where program development (such as the parent and resident handbook) will be discussed. In addition, the Parent Advisory Council will develop, and coordinate program events, and activities. 
  2. Attend Program Operation meetings to present initiatives derived from the Parent Advisory Council. Attend to other Program Operations issues when agenda items pertain to their role.
  3. In coordination with the Assistant Director for Transitional Coordinators, assist parents towards a successful discharge. This may include involvement with Discharge Groups, and as general support for families whose youngster is moving towards discharge.
  4. Assist with the Performance Improvement initiatives, as appropriate.
  5. Collaborate with the Case Work Supervisor with regard to the quarterly Parent Workshop.
  6. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Experience in parenting a child or adolescent with a serious emotional disturbance. Ability to work with diverse social, cultural, and economic groups.  Background in advocating in the mental health and/or education systems.  Good communication and listening skills.  Ability to be assertive.
