Job Description

OVERVIEW:   The Family Advocate (Educational Specialist) must assist families to set up, work towards and achieve goals based on identified needs, strengths, and challenges.  Using database identified by NYCDOHMH, document demographic data on all individuals seen, document and track family’s goals, and all services provided to parent/caregiver; participates in quality improvement activities.   Provide case consultation to staff on educational issues; provide staff training on accessing appropriate educational services for children and youth; maintain relationships with key staff of NYC Department of Education Regional and Citywide offices and NY State Educational Department; participate in selected meetings regarding educational needs of students.

RESPONSIBILITIES (include but are not limited to):

  • Assist families with identifying needs, strengths, and challenges
  • Monitor family progress to determine goals met
  • Collaborate with care providers and community supports to help families meet their goals
  • Develop a resource directory to identify formal services and informal services for families with mental health challenges/or at risk of experiencing mental health challenges
  • Conduct outreach/information sessions/workshops with providers across the child serving system
  • Help raise community awareness, reduce stigma and engage families in services
  • Participate in required staff meetings, community-level meetings and public policy forums
  • Trained in the Family Development Credential (FDC);  Family Support Child and Adolescent Needs and Strengths (FANS) instrument, and other required Staff Professional Development Trainings

REQUIREMENTS:  A peer (preferably) with at least 2 - 4 years experience navigating multiple child serving systems on behalf of their child or children with social, emotional, developmental, health and/or behavioral healthcare needs. Family Advocates are required to complete the PEP training and earn the Family Peer Advocate Credential (FPA) within a year of being hired.  To have the capabilities to direct families to formal and informal support services based on families goals. This Advocate must be culturally and linguistically competent (understanding language barriers) to communicate with/support the families they serve. Have good speaking, presentation and writing skills.
