Job Description


An Assistant Teacher is responsible for assisting the Head Teacher in all aspects of the management, care and overall treatment of a group of developmentally delayed pre-school children in a classroom setting. 

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (List the functions that are essential to achieve the goals):

  • Assist the Head Teacher in planning an educational program, including collaboration on curriculum and lesson plans and delivering small group instruction.
  • Assist the Head Teacher, in collaboration with clinical staff, in planning an individualized program which meets the educational, emotional and social needs of each child.
  • Assist the Head Teacher in implementing individual educational plans for each child and providing a therapeutic milieu for all of the children.
  • Keep observational notes, participate in ongoing informal assessments, and write educational session notes, progress reports, individual educational plans and evaluations.
  • Participate in weekly meetings and case presentation/treatment plan reviews, as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in semi-annual classroom parent meetings.
  • Participate in screening observations of prospective therapeutic nursery school candidates.
  • Be responsible for the management of the classroom and supervision of the Teacher Aide and Paraprofessionals in the Head Teacher’s absence.

EDUCATIONAL / TRAINING REQUIRED (List all that is required to achieve this position):

  • High School Diploma required. Current enrollment in a Master’s degree program in Special Education is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED / LANGUAGE PREFERENCE (List what the desire to reach goals):

Prior experience in early childhood and/or special education is strongly preferred.

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED (List the computer skills needed):

Basic computer proficiency.


As needed for the safe supervision of preschool children


As needed for the safe supervision of preschool children, including sitting on the floor with children, occasional lifting and holding.
