Job Description

Program Overview: 

The Jewish Board is developing a new program, Safe and Secure Home, which will provide targeted, skilled, and compassionate intervention in situations where residents are struggling with hoarding, extreme clutter and or extreme dirt and grime in their apartments.  This position will be a key member of this team and will provide motivation, encouragement, and hope to residents enrolled in this innovative program.

  • The Home-Based Specialist works directly with residents in their homes throughout 4 boroughs in New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx and Queens)
  • Carry a caseload of 12 Adult Residential residents struggling with extreme hoarding, clutter and dirt and grime.
  • Assist residents with cleaning, reducing hoarding and/or de cluttering using a patient, person-centered, engaging and collaborative approach.
  • Use Motivational Interviewing skills to provide counseling to help residents change behavior in an effort to sustain a safe and secure living environment.  In the process of developing a strong working relationship with each client, this position will provide compassion and encouragement in order initiate and maintain change.
  • Document efforts with residents in client database in timely fashion.
  • Ensure utilization of effective interventions that lead to defined, meaningful outcomes.
  • Request, organize and maintain supplies necessary for cleaning and de-cluttering activities in collaboration with program Porter.
  • Work in conjunction with Safe and Secure Home Social Worker providing an integrated team approach to environmental health and safety work with residents
  • Collaborate closely with Adult Residential program staff to promote sustainability of efforts.
  • Collaborate with Facilities Department.
  • Attend and participate in supervision
  • Attend and participate in team meetings
  • Other duties, as assigned.


EDUCATIONAL / TRAINING REQUIRED (List all that is required to achieve this position):

HS Diploma, BA preferred, with five yrs experience in relevant field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED / LANGUAGE PREFERENCE (List what the desire to reach goals):

  • Valid Drivers license and willingness to drive a van.
  • Prior experience with supportive housing population preferred.
  • Understanding or desire to understand issues relevant to Hoarding, De-Cluttering required.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills.

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED (List the computer skills needed):

  • Computer literacy


  • Willingness to work in residential environments that are disorganized, unclean and unsanitary.
  • Patience and compassion for clients who struggle with maintaining their home environment in a safe and clean manner.
  • Willingness to be trained in and apply motivational interviewing skills to work with residents.


Ability to travel throughout New York City.

Must be physically able to clean and de-clutter

Must be physically able to walk flights of stairs

Must be physically able to carry cleaning supplies up flights of stairs and in and out of apartments.
